Campuses

The institute has three active campuses, two of which opened in 2015.

National Institute of Design R&D Campus, Bengaluru

The National Institute of Design R&D Campus, Bengaluru, located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, specializes in research and development activities related to design.

History

The Bangalore office of NID was initially located at Rajaji Nagar and functioned as an interface to coordinate projects between the main institute at Ahmedabad and the technology industry which is centred on Bangalore.

A campus was later planned to be built at Yeshwantpur, a suburb in northwest Bangalore. The new campus was built at a cost of 7.5 crores and was officially inaugurated on 31 March 2006 by Dr Darlie O'Koshy, who was the executive director of NID at the time.

Courses

NID Bangalore offers a 2.5 year post graduation programme granting an M.Des degree in design for retail experience, digital game design, information design, interaction design and universal design. A total of 15 students constitute each of the above disciplines for an academic year.

Campus

The campus is located 3 km from Yeshwantpur railway station on the arterial Tumkur Road (National Highway 4) that connects Bangalore and Mumbai. The campus is in proximity to two other Central Government Institutes, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) and Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI), and is 5 km away from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) along the same road.

The Campus can be accessed by public transport buses operated by the BMTC from the junction of Outer Ring Road and Tumkur Road at Gorguntepalya or Peenya on Tumkur Road. The campus is also accessible by the Bangalore Metro and is located near the Peenya Metro Station.

Cultural and non-academic activities

Activities like sports, dramatics, music, festival celebrations, film screenings and Fine Arts also mark an important aspect in NID Bangalore. The various student committees viz Cultural Committee, Film Club, Sports Committee, Book Club and Publishing Committee actively engage the students in non-academic activities.

Dfrost

Dfrost is the annual design and cultural festival hosted by the National Institute of Design R&D campus, Bangalore. It is held around the 20th of March every year.

Background

As a result of the Industrial Policy Resolution of 1953, the government of India invited the design team of Charles and Ray Eames to recommend a programme of design to serve as an aid to small industries in India. On the basis of their document, 'The India Report', the government of India set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous national institution for research, service and training in industrial design and visual communication. The Sarabhai family, especially Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira, played a major role in establishment of this institute. Designer and sculptor Dashrath Patel was its founder secretary. He held the post till 1981, and was awarded the Padma Shri in the same year.

Courses offered

The institute offers three main courses, all of which follow the two semester per year pattern.

Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD)

This four-year course is offered in three specialsations by NID Vijayawada. Until 2014, NID Ahemdabad also used to confer this diploma. However, it has conferred a bachelor's degree since 2014 when the National Institute of Design Act 2014 was passed, allowing the institute to do so. This course has a total of 60 seats. Even though it is a diploma level certification, it is at par and better than other major design institutes in India by virtue of it being run by the central government and its age.

Bachelor of Design (B.Des)

This four-year course is offered in eight specialisations from the NID Ahmedabad Campus. This course has a total of 100 seats.

Master of Design (M.Des)

This two and a half year course is offered in 19 specialisations from all NID campuses ( Ahemdabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore). This course has a total of 275 seats.

NID also conducts workshops for industry professionals and students all year long. Some of these are for industry professionals only.

NODE - NIDs Online Design Education

In December 2015, NID launched NODE (NIDs Online Design Education), an online initiative which delivers self-directed and self-paced design classes from the faculty of the National Institute of Design to students across the country. Students need not be enrolled in NID, and must only pay a nominal fee, to take these classes. NID does not issue physical certificates on course completion. Only a digital certificate is issued. The first course was launched on 23 December 2015, titled "Design Fundamentals", and consisted of 47 online classes.
